Net Zero Roadmap A Global Pathway to Keep the 1.5 °C Goal in Reach 2023 Update
The IEA’s Net Zero Roadmap: 2023 Update argues that keeping 1.5°C within reach is still possible, but the window is narrower after energy-sector CO₂ hit a record ~37 Gt in 2022.
The pathway is front‑loaded: proven measures deliver most cuts this decade—tripling renewables capacity to ~11,000 GW by 2030, doubling the pace of energy‑intensity improvement, accelerating electrification (EVs and heat pumps), and cutting energy‑sector methane emissions by ~75% by 2030.
The report also stresses system enablers: faster grid expansion and permitting, credible sustainability disclosure, and large-scale finance—especially in emerging and developing economies where clean-energy investment must rise sharply.
Delays raise reliance on carbon removal (BECCS/DAC) later, increasing cost and feasibility risk.
Overall, the message is practical: scale what works now, build infrastructure, and cooperate internationally to avoid fragmentation.
