🌍 Earth Day 2026 – “Our Power, Our Planet”: From Global Action to Local Biodiversity Leadership in Taipei

Earth Day 2026: A Global Call to Collective Climate Action

Today, Wednesday, April 22, 2026, the world marks Earth Day under the global theme “Our Power, Our Planet.”.

This year’s theme emphasizes the power of people, communities, and businesses to protect the natural systems that underpin health, economies, and global security.

What began in 1970 as a U.S. environmental teach-in, inspired by rising concerns over pollution and ecological degradation, has grown into one of the largest civic movements in the world.

Today, Earth Day mobilizes more than a billion people globally.

In 2026 alone, there are over 9,000 registered Earth Day events worldwide, ranging from cleanups and biodiversity initiatives to climate forums and sustainability conferences.

The message is clear: environmental progress is not dependent on a single administration or election—it is driven by collective responsibility. (remember, it is always about collaboration)

ESG in Action: From Client Boardrooms to Sustainability Forums

This Earth Day feels especially meaningful following my recent business trip to Taipei. Between multiple client meetings, ESG advisory discussions, and pitching sessions, sustainability was no longer a side conversation—it was central to strategy.

Across financial institutions and corporates, climate risk disclosure, biodiversity reporting, and transition finance have moved from compliance requirements to competitive differentiators. I am happy for the ESG implementation, progress and framework alignment inside Taiwan, meaningful learning and discussion with some local regulators too.

Earth Day 2026 reinforces what we are seeing in boardrooms: sustainability is not philanthropy—it is long-term value creation.

Taipei Zoo: A Living Model of Biodiversity Stewardship

On the final day of the trip, in afternoon, I visited Taipei Zoo, one of Asia’s largest and most respected zoological parks. (allow me some relaxing moment and I always like to visit zoo during my travelling, to observe and learn from the nature and also say hello to all the funny, lovely animals)

Established in 1914, Taipei Zoo has evolved from a traditional animal exhibition space into a center for conservation, environmental education, and species protection.

The zoo plays a significant role in biodiversity preservation, particularly for endangered species native to Taiwan and the broader Asian region. Its conservation programs focus on habitat simulation, captive breeding, wildlife research, and public environmental education.

Walking through its thoughtfully designed ecological zones—from tropical rainforests to Asian wildlife habitats—it becomes clear that biodiversity conservation is not abstract policy.

It is tangible, measurable, and deeply connected to ESG metrics such as natural capital protection, ecosystem resilience, and community engagement.

(happy to see so many children, families and students go to the zoo, interact with the animals and learn about the concepts of Bio diversity and conservation ==> social awareness and education!)

In many ways, Taipei Zoo reflects Earth Day’s core principle: environmental sustainability must integrate science, education, and public participation.

Conservation awareness starts with exposure, and exposure creates responsibility.

Biodiversity and ESG: The Missing Middle in Corporate Sustainability

While climate change continues to dominate headlines, biodiversity loss is emerging as a critical ESG priority. Investors, regulators, and global institutions are increasingly recognizing that protecting ecosystems is essential to economic stability.

Earth Day’s 2026 theme highlights that environmental resilience depends on collective power. Biodiversity protection—whether in protected forests, urban parks, or zoological conservation centers—demonstrates how environmental stewardship intersects with governance, risk management, and sustainable finance.

The future of ESG reporting will increasingly include nature-related disclosures (TNFD framework), ecosystem risk assessments, and measurable conservation impact.

Institutions that integrate biodiversity into strategy today will lead tomorrow’s sustainability economy.

Gratitude and Cross-Border Collaboration

I would also like to extend my sincere appreciation to my Hong Kong colleagues, Billy and Martin, for their outstanding support during the Earth Day Forum event hosted at Bank of China, Central.

Cross-border collaboration strengthens ESG momentum. Sustainability is rarely driven by individuals alone—it is enabled by teams willing to align expertise, networks, and shared purpose.

Earth Day reminds us that impact scales through partnership.

Closing Reflection: Our Power, Our Responsibility

Fifty-six years after the first Earth Day mobilized public environmental awareness, the responsibility now sits squarely with business leaders, financial institutions, and policymakers.

“Our Power, Our Planet” is more than a slogan.

It is a reminder that sustainable transformation is driven by collective leadership—across governments, corporations, communities, and individuals.

From global sustainability forums to biodiversity preservation in Taipei Zoo, Earth Day 2026 reinforces one powerful truth:

ESG is no longer optional—it is foundational.
